Southern Company is a holding company whose principal subsidiaries are three vertically integrated electric utilities — Alabama Power, Georgia Power, and Mississippi Power — providing retail and wholesale electric service in the Southeast; Southern Power, which develops and operates wholesale power generation and battery storage assets at market-based rates; and Southern Company Gas, which distributes natural gas in Illinois, Georgia, Virginia, and Tennessee.
Additional subsidiaries include Southern Nuclear, which operates the system's nuclear plants; PowerSecure, which develops distributed energy and microgrid solutions for commercial, industrial, governmental, and utility customers; and Southern Linc, which provides digital wireless communications covering approximately 122,000 square miles in the Southeast. SCS, the system service company, furnishes centralized administrative, engineering, and operational services to system subsidiaries on a direct or allocated-cost basis.
