Norfolk Southern Corporation owns and operates Norfolk Southern Railway Company, a major freight railroad transporting raw materials, intermediate products, and finished goods primarily in the Southeast, East, and Midwest United States. The company operates approximately 19,100 route miles in 22 states and the District of Columbia and offers the most extensive intermodal network in the eastern half of the U.S.
The railroad serves manufacturing plants, power generators, mines, and distribution centers within its territory and handles overseas freight through Atlantic and Gulf Coast ports via interchange with connecting carriers. In July 2025, Norfolk Southern entered a merger agreement with Union Pacific Corporation in a stock-and-cash transaction that remains pending regulatory approval from the U.S. Surface Transportation Board.
